Canoe the Muskegon River

Muskegon means Happy River. The spring-fed waters of the river start from beautiful Higgins Lake, flowing into Houghton Lake and down into the backwaters of Reedsburg Dam. Flowing over a bed of sand, at approximately 3-4 mph, the Muskegon River makes its way through the Houghton Lake Wildlife Research Area on its way to White Birch, and then passes through the Houghton Lake State Forest downstream from White Birch. This clean, unpolluted water has an average depth during the summer of approximately 2-3 feet.
